What Is a Mastering Chain? The Signal Chain, Explained

A mastering chain is the ordered series of processors your finished mix passes through — EQ, compression, saturation, limiting — in a sequence where the order matters as much as the tools. The seven stages, what each does, and why every pro chain follows the same structure.

The short answer: a mastering chain is the ordered sequence of audio processors a finished mix passes through to become a release-ready master — typically EQ, compression, tone shaping, stereo control, saturation, and a limiter, in that order. The word "chain" matters: each processor feeds the next, so the order changes the result as much as the tools do. A compressor before surgical EQ reacts to problems the EQ would have removed; a limiter before saturation crushes harmonics that should have been created first.

I master my own releases (50M+ streams through Sony, Universal, Ultra, and Dim Mak), and every chain I build follows the same seven-job structure. This page is the structure itself — the thing that stays constant whether you're on stock plugins or a $5,000 rack.

Every serious chain is a variation of this. The tools change; the jobs and their order don't.

Why the order is the actual secret

Three examples of what goes wrong when the sequence breaks:

  • Compression before surgical EQ: the compressor reacts to the rumble and resonances you were about to remove, pumping on energy that shouldn't exist. Clean first, then glue.
  • Limiting before saturation: saturation creates harmonics that add perceived loudness for free. Put it after the limiter and those harmonics push into a ceiling that's already closed — distortion instead of density.
  • Widening before low-end control: stereo processing on an uncontrolled low end wastes limiter headroom and collapses in mono on club systems.

This is also why "just put a limiter on it" produces loud-but-small masters: a limiter is stage seven of seven. The six stages before it are what give it something worth being loud.

What goes IN the chain matters as much as the chain

A mastering chain expects a finished mix with headroom — peaking around -6 to -3 dB, no limiter baked in, exported at the session's sample rate. Feeding a crushed or unfinished mix into a great chain produces a polished version of the problem. Quick answers

Is a mastering chain the same as a mix bus chain? No — a mix bus chain processes the stereo bus while mixing (gentler, decisions still open). The mastering chain is the final pass on the finished mix.

How many plugins should a mastering chain have? As many as there are jobs to do — usually 5 to 7. More isn't better; every processor adds noise, phase shift, and opportunities to overcook.

Can one plugin be the whole chain? Suites like Ozone put all seven stages in one window — it's still a chain, just hosted in one plugin. The structure is identical.

Does the chain change per genre? The structure stays; the settings move. Club music pushes stages 4, 6, and 7 harder; dynamic genres barely touch them. Loudness targets by genre are here.
