How to Master a Song: The Complete Process, Start to Finish
The full mastering process in one place: preparing the mix, the chain structure that works in every DAW, loudness decisions, verification, and the honest line between DIY and hiring a pro.
Mastering has been mystified into either magic (only golden-eared wizards in treated rooms may touch it) or nothing (click the AI button, done). Both versions are wrong, and both are expensive: one costs you confidence, the other costs you quality.
The truth: mastering is a process with maybe ten real decisions in it. I have mastered records that went to 50M+ streams, and this is the entire process, start to finish. Read it once and you will at least know what you are paying for. Follow it and you can do a legitimate job yourself.
What mastering is (30 seconds)
Mastering takes your finished stereo mix and prepares it for release: final tone, final dynamics, competitive loudness, technical safety, and translation across every playback system from AirPods to festival rigs. It does NOT fix mixes. If the vocal is buried, mastering cannot un-bury it. Mixing vs mastering, fully explained, if that line is blurry for you.
Step 1: prepare the mix that deserves it
Ninety percent of bad masters are bad mixes wearing a limiter. Before mastering anything:
- Leave headroom. Mix peaking around -6 to -3 dB, nothing on the master bus except maybe gentle glue you have committed to. No limiter on the bounce.
- Bounce at the session's native sample rate, 24-bit WAV. No MP3s, ever.
- Listen to the whole bounce once, start to finish. Clicks, cut-off reverb tails, that one bass note that jumps out: fix them now, in the mix.

Step 2: set up the mastering session
New project, different day than the mix if you can manage it. Import your mix and two or three commercial references in your genre, level matched to each other. You will flip between them constantly; your ears drift within minutes and references are the anchor.
Step 3: the chain, seven jobs in order
Every serious mastering chain does the same jobs in roughly the same order, whatever the tools:

Step 4: the loudness decision
Not a competition, a decision. Master to what your genre actually demands: house and techno live around -8 to -7 LUFS integrated, pop around -10 to -8, dynamic genres quieter still. Streaming normalization turns loud masters down cleanly, so the -14 LUFS myth is exactly that. The full targets table and both loudness myths are in how loud should my master be.
Non-negotiable regardless of genre: true peak ceiling at -1.0 dBTP, because streaming transcoding pushes peaks and clipped encodes add distortion you never approved.
Step 5: the translation test
Bounce a draft and play it on at minimum: your monitors or headphones, cheap earbuds, a phone speaker, and ideally a car. You are listening for: does the low end survive small speakers, does the top end get harsh on cheap ones, does the vocal stay present everywhere, does the drop still drop.
One system disagreeing means adjust and re-bounce. All systems agreeing means done.
Step 6: verify before you distribute
Ears first, then measurement. Check integrated LUFS against your genre target, true peak against the -1.0 ceiling, and the technical flags that get releases bounced by distributors. Step 7: deliver correctly
24-bit WAV at the session sample rate for distribution (your distributor transcodes from there). Keep an un-limited version of the master too; you will want it for sync, video, and the remaster you might do in five years.
