The Ableton Mastering Chain I Actually Use (Stock Plugins Only)

A complete mastering chain built from Ableton stock devices: the order, the settings, and why each device is there. This is the exact structure behind my own releases.

You do not need a single third-party plugin to master a record in Ableton. I know that sounds like a setup for a compromise, but it is not. Some of my own releases went out through a chain built entirely from stock devices, and those records sit next to major-label masters on playlists without flinching.

What you need is the right devices, in the right order, doing one job each. That is the part almost every YouTube tutorial gets wrong: they show you a limiter preset and call it mastering. A real chain is a sequence of small, deliberate decisions, and the order matters as much as the settings.

This is the structure I use. Load it once, understand what each stage does, and you will stop guessing.

Seven devices. Every one of them ships with Ableton Standard or Suite. Here is what each stage is actually doing and where people go wrong.

Stage 1: the surgical EQ

The first EQ Eight is not there to make anything sound good. It is there to remove what should not be in the master at all.

Start with a high-pass filter. On most electronic music I set it between 20 and 30 Hz with a 12 dB/octave slope. Everything below that range is energy your limiter will fight later and no playback system will reproduce. Then sweep for resonances: narrow Q, boost to find the ugly frequency, then cut it by 2 to 4 dB. Most mixes have one or two, usually in the low mids around 200 to 400 Hz.

The mistake here is cutting too much. If you find yourself with five cuts deeper than 4 dB, the problem is the mix, not the master. Go back and fix it there.

Stage 2: glue

The Glue Compressor is modeled on the classic SSL bus compressor, and it earns its name. Settings that work on almost everything: ratio 2:1, attack 10 or 30 ms, release on Auto, and then pull the threshold down until you see 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections. Not more.

You are not compressing for loudness here. You are compressing so the kick, bass, and everything above them move together instead of fighting. If you can clearly hear the compressor working, back off.

Stage 3: the musical EQ

Second EQ Eight, completely different intent. Broad strokes, low Q, small moves. A half dB of shelf above 8 kHz for air. Maybe 1 dB at 60 Hz if the low end needs weight. Maybe a half dB dip around 250 Hz if things feel boxy.

Every move here should be under 1.5 dB. If the master needs more than that, again, the mix is asking for attention.

Stage 4: multiband control

Multiband Dynamics scares people because the interface is dense. Use it for exactly two things and ignore the rest.

First, low band compression. Set the low crossover around 120 Hz, and compress just that band with a slow attack and about 1 to 2 dB of reduction. This keeps the sub consistent between sections, which is half of what makes a master feel professional on a big system.

Second, if the mix gets harsh in the 2 to 5 kHz range when it is loud, set the high-mid band to only compress when that range spikes. That is de-harshing without dulling the whole record.

Stage 5: width and mono safety

Utility, width at 100 percent by default. If the mix feels narrow you can push to 110, but check mono every single time you touch this. Flip the Utility to mono and listen: if the chorus collapses or the lead vanishes, you have a phase problem that widening will make worse on club systems, which sum the low end to mono anyway.

While you are here: keep everything below roughly 120 Hz mono. Multiband Dynamics ahead of the Utility can help, or split the band with two Utilities in an Audio Effect Rack if you want to be precise.

Stage 6: saturation, the secret loudness stage

This is the stage that separates masters that sound loud from masters that are loud. Saturator in Soft Sine mode, drive between 1 and 3 dB, output compensated so the level matches with the device on and off.

What it does: adds harmonic density, which your ear reads as louder and fuller without the limiter working harder. A/B it. The difference is subtle on laptop speakers and obvious on anything good.

Stage 7: the limiter, doing one job

Ableton's stock Limiter gets a bad reputation it does not deserve. Used correctly it is clean. Used as a loudness machine it sounds like a can being crushed, but so does every limiter.

Ceiling at -1.0 dB. That is not superstition: streaming platforms transcode your file, and transcoding can push peaks past 0. A -1.0 ceiling keeps the encoded version clean. Then raise the gain until you are hitting 2 to 3 dB of reduction on the loudest sections, and stop. If the record is not loud enough at that point, the work belongs in stages 2 through 6, not in the limiter.

For where your final loudness should land, read how loud your master should actually be. Short version: stop chasing -8 LUFS unless your genre truly demands it.

The order is the point

Read the chain again and notice the logic: clean first, glue second, shape third, control fourth, then density, then the ceiling. Each stage hands a better signal to the next one. When people complain their limiter sounds bad, the limiter is usually the only honest device in the chain, reporting problems created upstream.

Two final habits that matter more than any setting:

Level match everything. Every device should be compared at equal loudness with the bypass. Louder always sounds better for about ninety seconds, and then you have a harsh master and no idea why.

Reference constantly. Keep two or three commercial tracks in your genre on a muted track, level matched to your master. Flip between them every few minutes. Your ears drift fast, and references are the anchor.
