Every week someone sends me a master and asks the same question: is this loud enough? And half the time the honest answer is that it is too loud, crushed flat chasing a number they read in a forum thread from 2019.

So let me give you the real answer, with actual targets, and clear up the two myths that ruin more masters than any plugin ever has.

Myth one: "master to -14 LUFS because Spotify normalizes there"

This is the most repeated bad advice in audio. Yes, Spotify's default playback normalizes around -14 LUFS. No, that does not mean you should master at -14 LUFS.

Here is what actually happens: if your master is louder than the normalization target, Spotify turns it DOWN. Nothing bad happens to the sound. Turning down is clean, transparent gain reduction. Your -8 LUFS master plays back at the same perceived level as everyone else's, keeping all the density and character you built.

What the myth gets you instead: a -14 LUFS master of a house record that sounds thin and polite next to every commercial release in the genre when normalization is off, which it is in DJ software, in clubs, on downloads, on some platforms, and for every listener who disabled it.

Master to what the genre demands. Let the platforms turn it down.

Myth two: louder always wins

The opposite mistake. Slamming a limiter until the master hits -6 LUFS does not make the record hit harder. It removes the transients that made it hit at all. The kick becomes a click, the drop becomes a wall, and on a loud system it is fatiguing instead of exciting.

Loudness comes from arrangement, mix density, and saturation long before the limiter. A well-built master at -9 LUFS will feel louder than a crushed one at -7. If you want the technique behind that, the saturation stage in my Ableton chain breakdown is where most of it lives.

If you are in electronic music and your master lands between -8.5 and -7 with clean transients, you are in professional territory. Full stop.

The two numbers that matter more than LUFS

True peak: keep it at or under -1.0 dBTP. When platforms transcode your WAV to AAC or Ogg, the encoding can push peaks past your ceiling. A master that peaks at -0.1 can clip after encoding and add distortion you never approved. Set the limiter ceiling to -1.0 dBTP and this problem does not exist. This matters more than any loudness decision, because it is the one that adds actual distortion to your release.

Dynamics between sections. A number no meter gives you directly: the contrast between your quietest section and your loudest. If the breakdown and the drop measure nearly the same, the drop cannot feel like a drop. Leave room in the verses and breaks. The loud parts only work if something quieter comes before them.

How to actually check your master

Meters in your DAW tell you LUFS and true peak. What they do not tell you is whether the master is genuinely release-ready: whether the loudness is competitive for the genre, whether the transcoded version will clip, whether there are technical issues that get releases flagged by distributors.

The practical workflow

  1. Mix until the rough master needs almost nothing. The chain should polish, not rescue.
  2. Master with references from your genre level-matched next to you. Trust the comparison, not the meter.
  3. Land in the genre range from the table, with the limiter doing 2 to 3 dB of work at most.
  4. Ceiling at -1.0 dBTP, always.
  5. Verify with a proper check before release.
