The Waves plugins worth putting on a master bus, in the right order: which of the 200+ plugins matter, the settings that work, and the traps that make Waves masters sound dated.

A Waves Mastering Chain That Actually Competes (7 Plugins)

Waves has a catalog problem. Over 200 plugins, half of them legendary, half of them filler, and nothing in the marketing tells you which is which. So producers end up with an SSL bundle, three compressors they never open, and no idea what belongs on a master bus.

Here is the truth: you need seven Waves plugins to build a mastering chain that competes with anything. I have used this structure on records that sit on editorial playlists next to major-label masters. The rest of the catalog can stay in the drawer.

If you own the Gold or Platinum bundle you already have most of these. Here is what each stage is doing.

Stage 1: F6, the modern workhorse

The F6 might be the best value in the entire Waves catalog. It is a dynamic EQ, which means the bands only cut when the problem appears instead of thinning the track full-time.

Use it for the surgical work: a high-pass around 20 to 30 Hz, then find the one or two resonances every mix has (usually low mids, 200 to 400 Hz) and set dynamic cuts of 2 to 4 dB that engage only when those frequencies spike. This is cleaner than static cuts and it is the modern way to do the job.

Stage 2: the SSL G-Master

The hardware this models glued half the records you grew up on. Ratio 2:1, attack 10 or 30 ms, auto release, threshold pulled down to 1 to 2 dB of reduction on the loudest sections. The mix should move as one piece afterward. If you hear pumping, back the threshold off.

One honest note: Waves' SSL, Ableton's Glue, and Logic's Studio VCA are all modeling the same circuit. If you read my Ableton chain guide, this is the same stage with a different logo. The structure of mastering does not change between toolsets, which is exactly the point.

Stage 3: the PuigTec

This is where Waves earns its place in the chain. The EQP-1A models the Pultec trick that engineers have loved for sixty years: boost and attenuate the same low frequency simultaneously. Set 30 or 60 Hz, a little boost, a little attenuation, and the low end gets bigger AND tighter at the same time. Nobody fully agrees on why it works this well. It works this well.

Up top, a gentle boost at 12 or 16 kHz adds air that sounds expensive instead of harsh. Keep every move small: this is a tone box, not a repair tool.

Stage 4: C4 on the low end

The C4 is old and the interface shows it, but the sound holds up. Two jobs only: compress the band below ~120 Hz by 1 to 2 dB with a slow attack so the sub stays consistent between sections, and, if the mix gets harsh when loud, let the 2 to 5 kHz band pull down spikes by a dB or two. Bypass the other bands. Four bands of active multiband compression is how masters lose their life.

Stage 5: S1, with restraint

The S1 Imager widens. Width at default unless the mix genuinely needs help, never past ~1.2, and check mono after every adjustment. Club systems sum the low end to mono, and phone speakers sum everything. If the drop collapses in mono, the width was a lie. I explain mono compatibility fully in the glossary.

Stage 6: J37 tape

The density stage, and the one people skip because it is subtle on laptop speakers. The J37 tape model on low input settings adds harmonic saturation that reads as louder and fuller without the limiter working harder. If you have NLS instead, the bus saturation on low drive does a similar job. Level match the comparison or louder-sounds-better will fool you.

Stage 7: the L2

Twenty-five years old and still completely fine. Ceiling at -1.0 dB (true peak safety through streaming transcoding), then raise the threshold until you see 2 to 3 dB of attenuation on the loudest sections. Done. If that is not loud enough, the problem is upstream, and here is where your loudness should actually land by genre.

The traps that make Waves masters sound dated

Preset stacking. Waves presets were mostly made in the 2000s for CDs. A chain of factory presets lands you in 2007. Use the structure above and set everything by ear against modern references.

The wrong plugins. OneKnob anything, Maxx anything, and most of the "instant" processors do not belong on a master bus. They are mix crutches at best.

Buying more instead of learning seven. The catalog wants you collecting. The record wants you practicing. Seven plugins, understood deeply, beat two hundred owned vaguely.
