The Plugin Alliance Mastering Chain: Boutique Sound, Right Order

Plugin Alliance is where the boutique hardware lives: Brainworx console emulations, SPL's mastering-grade processors, elysia's compressors, the Black Box saturator that quietly ended up on half the modern masters you like. It is also a catalog with hundreds of plugins and zero guidance, sold through deals so aggressive that most producers own more PA plugins than they have ever opened.

This is the chain worth building from that catalog. It is the structure behind my Plugin Alliance master chains, and it competes with hardware racks that cost more than a car.

The chain

Six stages. If you own different PA plugins, the roles transfer: match the job, not the logo.

Stage 1: bx_digital, the Swiss army knife

Brainworx built its reputation on this EQ and it does three jobs at once. First the boring one: high-pass at 20 to 30 Hz, cut the one or two resonances every mix carries.

Then the one that makes it special: mid/side mode. You can EQ the center of the mix separately from the sides. Practical uses: clean mud out of the mid channel without touching the wide synths, add air to the sides only so the top end opens without sharpening the vocal, and tighten bass by working the mid channel where the low end should live. Small moves. Mid/side EQ is a power tool, and power tools remove fingers.

Stage 2: the Shadow Hills

The most beautiful-looking plugin in the catalog and one of the best sounding. It is a two-stage compressor: optical first, then discrete VCA. For mastering: optical stage doing almost nothing (a dB of slow smoothing), VCA stage at 2:1 with 1 to 2 dB of reduction on the loud sections.

Then the transformer switch: Nickel is clean, Iron is thicker, Steel is aggressive. This is tone shaping disguised as a compressor setting, and it is the character move of the whole chain. Nickel or Iron for most electronic music.

Stage 3: musical tone

The SPL PQ is a full mastering EQ from an actual mastering console lineage: huge headroom, broad musical curves. If you do not own it, a second bx_digital instance in stereo mode does the job. Either way, the rules are constant across every chain I publish: moves under 1.5 dB, wide curves, level matched, referenced against commercial records.

Stage 4: bx_XL, the secret weapon

This one is unique to the PA catalog: a mid/side multiband processor where the low band can be summed to mono and driven separately. That means one plugin gives you: mono low end below your crossover (club safety, automatically), independent control of mid and side density, and a volume-maximizing drive stage that adds real loudness before the limiter.

Set the low crossover around 100 to 120 Hz, mono the lows, and drive gently. This stage is why PA chains can get loud while staying wide and clean.

Stage 5: the HG-2

The Black Box Analog Design HG-2 is a tube saturator built for mastering, and it has become a quiet industry standard. Pentode for density, triode for warmth, the air switch for top-end sheen. Used at low settings, level matched, it does what every great saturation stage does: perceived loudness and fullness the limiter does not have to pay for with your transients. This is the stage that separates loud-sounding from loud, the same principle as in the Ableton and Waves chains, executed with better electronics.

Stage 6: bx_limiter True Peak

Does exactly what the name says. Ceiling at -1.0 dBTP, 2 to 3 dB of reduction at the loudest moments, and its Foundation control adds a last touch of density if the record needs it. Genre targets are in how loud should my master be; the ceiling is not negotiable, the loudness is a genre decision.

Buying advice, honestly

Plugin Alliance runs constant sales and the catalog is designed to make you collect. If you are buying for this chain, the priority order is: bx_digital V3, HG-2, bx_limiter True Peak, then Shadow Hills, then bx_XL, then SPL PQ. The first three cover 80 percent of the result.
