How Much Does Spotify Pay for 1 Million Streams? What You Actually Keep (2026)

What 1 million Spotify streams pays in 2026, and what actually lands in your account: the gross estimate, the take-home as an independent artist with a distributor versus a signed artist on a label split, a chart from 1K to 10M streams, and the four things that move the number.

How Much Does Spotify Pay for 1 Million Streams? What You Actually Keep (2026)

The short answer: 1 million Spotify streams pays roughly $3,500 to the master owner at a global-average listener mix, and closer to $4,500 if most of your listeners are in the US. Independent with a distributor, you keep almost all of that: about $3,200 to $3,500. Signed to a typical label deal at a 20% royalty, your share is about $700, and only after the label has recouped your advance. These are estimates. Spotify doesn't pay a fixed rate per stream, so the real number moves with listener country, paid versus free listening, and the year.

Put your own stream count, country, and platform mix into the streaming royalty calculator and you'll get the same math for your catalog in about ten seconds.

I've collected royalties on 50M+ streams as an independent artist. This is the math I plan with, not a screenshot of someone's statement.

What Spotify pays, from 1K to 10M streams

Estimates use ~$0.0035 per stream (Spotify, global-average listener mix, 2026), the same rate the calculator uses.

StreamsSpotify gross (est.)Independent keeps (distributor)Signed keeps (~20% royalty)
1,000~$3.50~$3.20 to $3.50~$0.70, before recoupment
10,000~$35~$32 to $35~$7, before recoupment
100,000~$350~$320 to $350~$70, before recoupment
1,000,000~$3,500~$3,200 to $3,500~$700, before recoupment
10,000,000~$35,000~$32,000 to $35,000~$7,000, before recoupment

How to read the columns:

  • Gross is what Spotify pays out for the master recording, to whoever owns it.
  • Independent assumes you own your masters and release through a distributor. Flat-fee distributors pass through 100% of royalties; commission distributors keep a slice, often around 9 to 15%. That's the range shown. DistroKid vs TuneCore vs Symphonic compares the fee models.
  • Signed uses a typical label artist royalty of about 20% of net. On most deals you see none of it until the label recoups the advance and costs. How much record labels take breaks the split down.

Same million streams, roughly a five-times difference in what reaches you. That gap isn't a Spotify problem. It's an ownership decision.

1 million streams on every platform

For context, here's the same million streams on the other major services, using the calculator's rates.

PlatformEst. per streamEst. per 1M streams
Spotify~$0.0035~$3,500
Amazon Music~$0.0045~$4,500
YouTube Music~$0.0048~$4,800
Deezer~$0.0064~$6,400
Apple Music~$0.0078~$7,800
Tidal~$0.0125~$12,500
Simple average of all six~$0.0066~$6,600

Spotify pays the least per stream on this list and still usually sends the biggest check, because it's where most of the streams happen. Apple Music vs Spotify pay per stream gets into why the rates differ.

The four things that move your 1 million stream payout

  1. Where your listeners live. Spotify pays from a revenue pool in each market. A paid-subscriber stream in the US or UK is worth far more than a stream from a market with cheap plans. The calculator's country setting models US listeners at about 30% above the global average, which turns $3,500 into about $4,550.
  2. Paid versus free listeners. Ad-supported streams pay a fraction of paid-subscriber streams. You can't see your listeners' plans, but your statement can.
  3. The 1,000-stream threshold. Since 2024, Spotify doesn't pay recording royalties on tracks with fewer than 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months. A million streams spread over a deep catalog loses a little to tracks that sit below the line; a million on a handful of tracks loses nothing.
  4. Who sits between you and the money. Distributor fee if you're independent, label royalty and recoupment if you're signed. This is the biggest lever on the page, and it's covered in how to own your masters.

The money the table leaves out

Every stream pays two royalties. The table above is the master side. There's also a publishing side for the song itself, paid to songwriters and publishers through a PRO and mechanical collection (The MLC in the US). It's smaller per stream, and your distributor doesn't collect it. If you write your own music and haven't registered, part of what your million streams earned is sitting unclaimed. How streaming royalties work has the setup checklist.

Timing matters too. Distributors usually report and pay a couple of months after the streams happen, so a big month on Spotify shows up as a big statement later, not right away.

How long does it take to get 1 million streams

It depends far more on playlisting and catalog than on any single song. A track that lands on a large editorial or algorithmic playlist can get there in weeks; a catalog of 30 songs earning a few thousand streams each a month gets there over a year and keeps going. Catalog compounds, which is why I push releasing consistently over waiting for one big hit. How I got my first 50 million streams is the long version, and how to get on Spotify playlists covers the placement side.

What 1 million streams is actually worth to you

$3,500 is real money, and it's not a salary. Spread over a year, a million Spotify streams is about $290 a month. The independent artists I know who live off music treat streaming as the compounding base layer and stack products, services, sync, and direct-to-fan income on top. How to make money with music maps that stack, and how much Spotify pays per stream covers the per-play math behind every number here. When you want the figure for your own catalog, the calculator does it with your stream counts and your audience's country.

Quick answers

How much does Spotify pay for 1 million streams? Roughly $3,500 to the master owner at a global-average listener mix in 2026, and up to about $4,500 with a mostly US audience. It's an estimate that varies by country, subscription tier, and year.

How much does an independent artist keep from 1 million Spotify streams? About $3,200 to $3,500, depending on whether your distributor charges a flat fee or takes a commission. Publishing royalties are extra and collected separately.

How much does a signed artist get from 1 million Spotify streams? At a typical 20% royalty, about $700, credited against the advance first. Many signed artists see nothing in cash until they recoup.

How much is 1 million streams across all platforms? About $6,600 using a simple average of the six major services, from about $3,500 on Spotify to about $12,500 on Tidal.
